What is the meaning of BTU in air conditioners?

(Q) What is "Ton of refrigeration" and how it has been derived ?

Ans. The refrigeration capacity of a machine is expressed in "Ton of refrigeration." Because before the discovery of mechanical refrigeration system, refrigeration was produced by ice and its use was expressed in pounds or tons of ice required per unit of time, usually per day. The value of American ton in pounds by weight is 2000 pounds. Now considering the latent heat of fusion of ice is 144 B.T.U./lb. We can find the value of heat of American ton of ice in B.T.U.

Ton of Refrigeration                                = 2000 x 144
                                                            -------------------------
                                                              = 288000 B.T U./day

                                                                =2000 x 144
                                                             ---------------------------
OR                                                                 24

                                                             = 12000 B.T.U./hour.

                                                              =2000 x 144
                                                          ----------------------------
OR                                                              24x60

                                                                = 200 B.T.U./min.

In M.K.S. system the weight of one ton of ice is approximately 900 kilo grams and the latent heat of ice is 80 kilo calories/kg. Therefore, in M.K.S. system :

                              Ton of refrigeration = 900 x 80
                                                               = 72000 kilo calories/day

                                                               =72000    =    3000 kilo calories/hour
                                                            --------------
                                                                    24

                                                                 72000
                                                           ----------------
                                                                 24x60   =    50 kilo calories/minute

Ton of refrigeration" can be defined as it is an agent which can add or remove heat at the rat of 288000 B.T.U. or 72000 kilo calories per day.

(Q) How many B.T.U. of heat, one ton refrigerating machine can remove in an hour ?

       Ans. 12000 B.T.U. /hour.

(Q) How many kilo calories of heat, one ton refrigerating machine can remove in an hour ?

Ans. A refrigerating machine of one ton capacity can remove 3000 kilo calories of heat in an hour.
